Early Literacy Resources

For Kids 0-5:

Supporting a child's ability to learn in the years before they begin reading prepares them to do well in school and life! Here are some ways you can talk, read, sing, write, and play together through the library.

In the Library:

ABC Mouse (access from inside the library)
Using animated games and puzzles, kids learn the basics of math and reading and are introduced to art, music, science, and social studies. 


AWE Computers
Special stations just for kids, to play educational games with easy-to-use technology.

Baby Library Card
Bring your ID to any library location to sign up and start reading with your child every day.

Early Learning Centers
Play centers are equipped to encourage dramatic play, creativity, imagination, and narrative skills. 

Storytimes
Story and song-filled program, designed to build literacy skills and prepare kids for school.   Go to bit.ly/fcplkidscalendar to view the calendar of events. 

Storytime Backpacks
Check out a backpack of books on a theme to share with your child. In English and Spanish, at select branches.

e-Picture Books on Libby and CloudLibrary
Look at a colorful picture book online if you can’t get to the library.

Kanopy Kids
Watch books come to life through this movie streaming site’s Story Time videos.

For Kids 6-12

These digital learning resources provide children a space to learn and explore with their parents, or on their own, in a safe and secure online educational environment. You will need a library card for access.

Environmental Studies
Focuses on the physical and social aspects of environmental issues through topic overviews, journals, news, and multimedia content.

An educational site for students to use for homework help, projects, or learning at home.

Learning Express School Center
Designed to help 4th and 5th graders do their best in math, reading, writing, and language.

National Geographic Kids Virtual Library
Provides a complete archive of National Geographic magazine - every page of every issue - along with a collection of interactive maps, images, and videos.

Science
Provides contextual information on hundreds of today's most significant science topics.

TrueFlix

An online resource for science and social studies for grades 3 and up, it helps students improve literacy skills, build content-area knowledge, and cultivate the critical skills necessary for academic success and college and career readiness.

Community Resources

Do you have questions about your child’s development, learning or behavior? Call 1-866-5437-464. HMG promotes early child health, developmental screening and linkage for young children and their families to community-based services and supports. Such as: my child is 3 years old, is his talking okay for his age?
