A Crack in the Sea by H.M. Bouwman

Three families, two worlds, and one magical portal.

No one comes to the second world on purpose. The portal between worlds can't be found on any map and opens only when least expected. The Raft King is desperate to change that and finally find a way home for the people of Raftworld--back to the first world. To do it, he needs Pip, a young boy with an incredible gift: he can talk to fish. And soon enough, Pip's sister, Kinchen, learns that the Raft King is not above kidnapping to get what he wants.

But Pip's is only the first of three extraordinary tales that collide on the high seas of the second world. The next story takes us back to the beginning: Venus and Swimmer are twins captured aboard a slave ship bound for Jamaica in 1781. A life of bondage and unspeakable cruelty await them, except they manage to save themselves first. The plan is risky, but with a little luck and some magic, the brother and sister just might be able to find their way from the shark-infested waters of the first world to the safety of the second. Pip and Kinchen will hear all about Venus and Swimmer before their own story is said and done. So will Thanh, whom we meet on a small boat as he and his sister, Sang, try to escape war-torn Vietnam. But after a ferocious storm and a vicious pirate attack, their not sure they'll ever see land again.

Pip and Kinchen, Venus and Swimmer, Thanh and Sang--what connects these three sets of siblings is the adventure of a lifetime, some helpful sea monsters, and a very special doorway, With stunning illustrations by Yuko Shimizu, H.M. Bouwmain's A Crack in the Sea is a powerful, timely, and heartrending tale.

Update: Congratulations to our latest winner, Joshua D.!
